Moving Home? 3 Tips for a smooth move
by Louise D'Allura on November 13th, 2014

The end of the year signifies a common time for many families to embark on moving house.

Moving is one of the most stressful and nerve-wracking experiences.  When I help clients prepare for a move the first piece of advice I give is plan ahead!   By thinking ahead it can make the process go a whole lot smoother!  Here are my top tips to prepare for your move and will make living in your new home A LOT easier!

1) Create Room Function Charts for your new home

Too often when we move home we get overwhelmed by the packing, and then at the other end unpacking is the exhausting task we just want finished yesterday!  Thinking ahead is the best strategy to making setting up your new home easier and quicker.

BEFORE YOU MOVE IN - decide what you want from your home.  Think about how you want each room to feel. Take photos of each room in your new home to help you remember the features and space you have available.

Thinking about how you want to live in that space will help you evaluate how much stuff you really need.

As you think through each room in your future home it makes it easier to work out what you need to keep based on what you actually have room for.

Some key questions to ask yourself (if you haven’t already):

  • What’s the purpose of the space?
  • Who will use it?
  • How will it be used?
  • What needs to be put into this room (and layout)?
In every room look at how you can set up the items you use most in the most logical locations.  In every room this will look a little different, but the fundamentals are the same – items you use most often need to be within easy reach – items you don’t use often can be kept up high or down low.

Fundamental to any new home move is picking out a location for a landing zone.  Knowing this location early on will help you centralise your in and out going clutter into one area.   The spot (near front/ back door) needs to have space to keep backpacks, lunch bags, homework, school permission slips, your handbag, car keys, mobile. This might be a shelving system or old TV cabinet with baskets!

2) Declutter before you move
Now you know what you want to have in each space you can declutter much more easily BEFORE you pack.  The goal is to only take those items that deserve to be in your life.  One bonus to doing a pre-move purge is that if you have a weekend garage sale you can earn money to offset the cost of moving and may even be able to use the money you make to buy furnishings for your new place.

See our articles where we introduce you to the R-E-V-A-M-P process.

3) Pack for the new rooms
When packing, attach a basic inventory list on the outside of the box (not the top) so you can easily locate specific items quickly, even when boxes are stacked.  Attaching an inventory instead of writing on the box means that if you’re moving again or want to recycle the box for friends you just tear off the paper.

Sell heavy items that you can replace for the same cost as moving them. Why pay to move an old washing machine or lawn mower when you can sell it and buy a new one when you arrive?

4) BONUS TIP:
If you have a move coming up, start clearing your clutter now AND get professional help to do it!  Don't wait until you've only got days before your moving deadline.  The processes I've outlined help clients clear more clutter than they've been able to clear by themselves because we use the right approach - thinking about your new home, your goals and vision for that new life.

Now, I would love to hear from you!  In the comments below, tell me what are your top tips for moving?
